What is Consumer Price Index?

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a unit that measures the changes over the time of the prices of general goods and services consumed by a reference population group. It is generally calculated by taking the price changes of each item or services consumed and averaging them. Changes in the Consumer Price Index are used to assess the changes associated with cost of living.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a statistical technique used to measure the period of inflation or deflation as well as it is an constructive tool to see the effectiveness of Government policies.

Formula for Consumer Price Index Calculation

Consumer Price Index (CPI) is calculated using the below formula for the current period:

CPI=Cost of the market basket in the current period/Cost of market basket in the base period*100

Here the cost of market basket means the weighted average of the price of good and services in the basket consumed by the reference population.
